Welcome to the registration for the 12th Annual Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival.

To sign-up for the Verde Valley Birding and Nature Festival tours or events, it is necessary to first register as a participant for the festival. On-line registration requires a credit card as payment. At this time we can only accept Mastercard, Visa or Discover credit cards. A secure on-line transaction is provided through PayPal. To pay by check, please print out the registration form and send by mail.

Trip meeting times listed are actual depart times. Plan to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the departure time. This includes workshops as participants are shuttled to the classroom.

Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River and the upper and lower sections of Antelope Canyon. We begin near Page, AZ where we will spend the afternoon photographing Lower Antelope Canyon. That evening we return to the hotel for dinner, a photo class and critique of photos. Day two we drive south of Page to photograph Horseshoe Bend on the Colorado River. There is a one-mile hike to the edge of the 1,000’ cliffs through sand and over a small hill on a well-defined trail. Mid-day will find us at Upper Antelope Canyon, the most famous slot canyon in northern Arizona. Use this trip for Mid-afternoon we head back to Cottonwood arriving late afternoon. To photograph Horseshoe Bend you will need a wide-angle lens 14mm to 16mm. For the rest of the tour bring lenses from 28mm to 400mm, macro, zoom lenses work well, flash and tripod. Hotel, transportation, meals and all entry fees are included.

This trip visits one of the most unique travertine dominated streams and riparian areas in Arizona. After almost 100 years, flows were restored to the creek by Arizona Public Service when the company agreed to decommission two small hydropower facilities. It is once more a vibrant stream hosting native fish. The trip itself is two hours by van with a total of 30 miles of rough roads but spectacular scenery. Expect a typical suite of riparian birds in early spring, some uneven terrain hiking, and possibly hot sun at times. Box lunch included.

This will be a hard-hitting day of birding. First we travel to Sycamore Canyon, one of our vast wilderness areas with the Sycamore Creek flowing into the Verde River that offers a rare watering hole for many species of birds. Travel is along a dirt road with a hike down to the riparian canyon. Afterwards, we’ll drive back out and up Mingus Mt. to continue the birding adventure. By visiting two completely different environs in one trip, you will have the opportunity to bring home a long list of birds. This is our “Grand” Tour - an all day trip to Grand Canyon National Park on a luxury bus to see the California condor. That’s not all. We will join the Condor trip on the “Grand” Tour - an all day trip to Grand Canyon National Park on a luxury bus and a gourmet lunch at the beautiful, historic El Tovar restaurant. You travel up the Mogollon Rim onto the Colorado Plateau and along the base of the San Francisco Peaks, the highest point in Arizona. Geologist, Paul Lindberg will be along to explain the geologic landscape. Once there, the groups will split up and you will get a private presentation. We will leave in shuttle vans that will take us to nearby Tavasci Marsh where water and shore birds, raptors, and flycatchers abound. One of the many reasons for holding the festival at Dead Horse Ranch State Park is its location in the heart of the Verde River’s riparian corridor. A walk along the Verde River Greenway will provide opportunities to spot riparian dependent species. An expert guide will enhance your experience. You should be able to see most of the species of the season on the park’s bird list including the common black-hawk that is known to nest here.

Upper Oak Creek Canyon offers different varieties of birds than we see in the valley and the scenery is spectacular. As we celebrate Arizona’s Centennial, we want to look back to the beginning when the territory was new ground. New species were found here that had not been recorded before. The early naturalist who sought to find and document this new plants and animals were often also the camp doctors at military forts. We will visit Fort Verde State Historic Park to learn about these now famous men who opened the door to learning about the unique environments and species of the Arizona Territory.

THT14 First Class on the Verde Canyon Railroad   Remaining Tickets: 1

We will meet at the RDU at 11:30am to arrange carpooling to the station. The Verde Canyon Railroad helps sponsor this adventure. The Railroad reserves the right to change times of departures and arrivals. Please check for any changes at check-in.

The Verde Canyon is only accessible by railroad or hiking, but why do it the hard way? You deserve to go first class! The train leaves the station at 1pm. Travel through the canyon in a luxury train car furnished with soft couches while munching on treats. You may decide to join local naturalist Randy Hale on the open gondola car where he points out the natural and man-made features along the way. Randy really knows his raptors. Black-hawk and bald eagle nest in the canyon and often greet the train. Two hours later the train turns around in Perkinsville near a heron rookery. The ride back through the canyon gives you a second opportunity to spot wildlife and, of course, birds.

-Meet at Beasley Flats in Camp Verde. Directions will be provided. Cruising down the Verde River in a “Ducky Kayak” is a blast. Doing it at sunset is even better. You will discover a whole new world while gliding down the serene waters of the Verde River, the only ‘Wild & Scenic River’ in Arizona, in your safe and stable Ducky Kayak. The Verde River is an incredible wilderness of spectacular canyons with a multitude of wildlife. No experience is necessary for this safe and relaxing float down the gentle waters of the Verde. Your guide will assist you with basic paddling techniques and Sedona Adventure Tours will provide all of the gear you need to make this a truly enjoyable, memorable, and safe adventure. Total time on the river is 2 to 2.5 hours covering about 5 miles. Check-in at 3:00 PM at Beasley Flats in Camp Verde for a 4:00 PM launch. Bring sunhat, sunscreen, sunglasses, camera in a Ziploc water proof bag. Dress appropriately for the weather and the time of year. The Agua Fria National Monument is one of our National Park treasures managed by The Bureau of Land Management. We’ll bird along the Agua Fria River, which has been determined suitable for Wild and Scenic Status. The riparian corridors are an Audubon Important Bird Area and are dominated by an over-story of cottonwood and willow that shelter many different species of songbirds and raptors. Among these birds are Cooper’s and red-tailed hawks, kingbirds, vireos, wrens, warblers and sparrows. Tice brings a fresh perspective to the birding. Box lunch included.

This field trip will explore what was a working ranch on the Verde River outside of Camp Verde. The property is now owned and managed by Arizona State Parks as part of the Greenway Project to preserve the riparian corridor along the Verde River. The site is not open to the public and hosts a cottonwood-willow gallery forest that supports black-hawk, great-horned owls, a large number of neo-tropical migratory birds and, occasionally, a bald eagle. Wear good hiking shoes and be prepared for some walking.

Warblers are challenging to identify and Homer is not only knowledgeable; he can help you to master this skill. The most popular sport of eco-tourists is birding; the second is biking. With the high cost of gas and the strong desire to get out into nature, bikes are the natural solution. Back by popular demand, the park’s biking guru, Randy Victory, will lead the way while Victoria points out the avian sites. You cover more ground yet the bike is unobtrusive to wildlife. The trip takes you a few miles on paved trails and the dirt trail to Tavasci Marsh. You should be in good physical condition. Bring your own bike. All participants are required to wear a helmet.

This walk leaves from the Tuzigoot National Monument parking lot. Tavasci Marsh is one of the few fresh water marshes in Arizona. It is a critically important habitat for birds and other wildlife. Join the National Park Service for an ecology tour to this unique wildlife sanctuary. We will visit several different plant communities: grassland, mesquite bosque, cottonwood riparian habitat, and the marsh. We will do casual birding along the way. This is a strenuous walk with many stops. Bring water and hiking boots that you don’t mind getting wet. Meet at 8am in the lower parking lot at Tuzigoot National Monument, a short four-mile drive from the festival site.

This trip will take us up on top of the Mogollon Rim to explore the wetlands around Flagstaff. We will visit Kachina Wetlands and Anderson Mesa that includes Lake Mary, Mormon Lake and other smaller lakes. Birds we're hoping to see include gulls, ducks, and shorebirds. Bald eagles and osprey nest and hunt on these lakes. Tom Linda is one of our favorite guides; he is knowledgeable and willing to lend his expertise. This trip will take us into prime flycatcher country led by Homer Hansen of “Wings Over Willcox” fame. Do to popular request, we are adding this missed field trip to the schedule. This is a drive-yourself experience to the National Monument located off Highway 17, exit 293. Direction will be sent to those registering for this trip. A natural wonder, a riparian habitat, an expert guide, and birds combine to bring you a successful birding experience. Commonly found are riparian and open country species: flycatchers, vireos, and thrashers. The “Well” also attracts water birds. Walk along the canals of the Sinagua and explore trails in this unusual National Monument. Dress to walk cross-country. You are welcome to bring along a lunch and enjoy the picnic grounds after the guided walk.

Doug is not only the mayor of Clarkdale, he is our local guru on the Tavasci Marsh and proponent of the Verde River environment. He also is an avid birder, photographer and naturalist. Best of all, his home, perched on a ledge above the river, attracts wildlife and birds a-plenty. He has graciously offered to take a small group to his home to bird his garden. (which has been known to be visited by a mountain lion and a broad-billed hummingbird.) After some feeder watching, the adventurous can hike down to the river to continue some interesting wildlife and bird watching.This should prove to be a special trip. We will drive to Flagstaff to join Tom for an evening of owling on Mt. Humphreys, Arizona’s highest peak. Although the area is famous for its petroglyphs, it’s the canyon habitat we are going to see.
